In last three blog posts we have already got to know about Simple present tense, present perfect, present continuous and simple past Tense. Today we are going to learn past continuous tense.
What is Past Continuous Tense ?
पहचान :
1) इस Tense में हम ऐसे कामों की बात करते हैं जो बीते हुए समय में हो रहा था, चल रहा था, जारी था, क्रिया कब समाप्त हुआ यह पता नहीं चलता है। जैसे, वह सो रहा था। मैं सोच रहा था, वे लोग आ रहे थे।
2) इस Tense में helping Verb ‘was/were’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है जो अपने subject के अनुसार, और was/were के बाद verb form fourth (V⁴) ‘ing’ form में आता है।
इस में वाक्य के अंत में (रहा था, रही थी, रहे थे ) रहता है।
1) positive sentence of past continuous tense

Examples :
1. मैं पौधों में पानी डाल रहा था। I was watering into the plants.
2) तुम जिंद कर रहे थे। You were insisting.
3) हमलोग आपका इंतजार कर रहे थे। We were waiting for you.
4) वह बच्चों को खिला रही थी। She was feeding the baby.
5. राधा कहानी पढ़ रही थी। Radha was reading a story.
6) आदमी अपना घर बेच रहा था। The man was selling his house.
2) Negative sentences of past continuous tense
Structure – बनावट
Examples :
1) कल वर्षा नहीं हो रही थी। It was not raining yesterday.
2) वह घर साफ नहीं कर रही थी। She was not cleaning the house.
3) हमलोग उसे नहीं पीट रहे थे। We were not beating him.
4) वह नौकरी नहीं कर रहा था। He was not doing a job.
5) मेरा कलम नहीं चल रहा था। My pen was not working.
6) कैलाश लकड़ी नहीं जला रहा था। Kailash was not burning wood.
3) Interrogative sentences of past continuous tense
Structure – बनावट
Examples :
1) क्या वह घर में पढ़ रहा था ? Was he reading at home ?
2) क्या तुम उससे बातें कर रहे थे ? Were you talking with him ?
3) क्या वह नदी में तैर रहा था ? Was he swimming in the river ?
4) क्या लड़की भोजन बना रही थी ? Was the girl cooking ?
5) क्या वह सोने जा रहा था ? Was he going to sleep ?
6) क्या बिल्ली चुहा पकड़ रही थी ? Was the cat catching mouse ?
4) Wh-question of past continuous tense
Structure – बनावट
Wh-Words
What – क्या
Where – कहां
When – कब
Who – कौन
Why – क्यों
How – कैसे
Wh-Words के बाद was/were लगाना है फिर subject तब V⁴ और फिर object और question mark❓रहेगा। जैसा कि आप ऊपर चित्र में देख रहे होंगे।
Examples :
1) वह घर पर अकेले क्या कर रही थी ? What was she doing at home alone ?
2) वे लोग आपस में क्या बातें कर रहे थे ? What were they talking each other ?
3) कौन घर जा रहा था ? Who was going to house ?
4) वह कैसे दुकान सजा रहा था ? How was he decorating the shop ?
5) वह कुंआ क्यों खोद रहा था ? Who was digging a well ?
6) बस यहां कब आ रही थी ? When was the bus coming here ?
7) वह सब्जी कैसे काट रही थी ? How was she cutting veggies ?

Translate into English
वह क्यों रो रही थी ? आप क्यों हंस रहे थे ? वह मुझे कब बुला रहा था ? वह मज़ाक नहीं कर रहा था। वे लोग कहीं जा रहे थे। वह कार नहीं चला रही थी। क्या हमलोग सही बोल रहे थे ? वह झूठ क्यों बोल रहा था ? वह कैसे नाम लिख रहा था ? बच्चा दूध पी रहा था। लड़के मैदान में खेल रहे थे। तुम अंग्रेजी सीख रहे थे। पिताजी क्या बता रहे थे ? वह पतंग उड़ा रहा था। आदमी क्यों बहाना बना रहा था ?
